Craig, Alaska is a small fishing community that sits on the Western side of the Price of Whales Island. Craig has many different cultures incorporated into this town, Anglo, Native American, African American, etc. The population is approximately 1,200 people. This is a quiet and quaint community. However, that leads to children and teens being mischievous and getting into trouble for the lack of anything better to do.
We want to put together a team that is willing to develop an outreach to the children and youth via their favorite sport - basketball and to incorporate the Gospel message as we work with the kids. While we are in Craig we also put together a Vacation Bible School for the kids!
Fun fact about SE Alaska is that it is a rain forrest- this leads to many hours on the courts playing basketball since many other sports aren't an option. This gives us a huge open door to minister to the local kids through their favorite sport. By the end of the week we are not trying to create the next best NBA player. But giving children opportunities to play a sport they love that they may not pursue in school due to the competitive nature.
